After looking at many words beginning with the letter 'T' it became apparent that T'Rex was one of the favorites! I overheard some of the children discussing the amount of teeth a T'Rex would have... and what shape they would be! What a great opportunity for counting and exploring 1 - 1 correspondence! We created some fierce looking T'Rex's and then asked the children to give them teeth! The children were asked to count the teeth and write down the corresponding number!
As you can imagine, there were a lot of sounds floating around the room as we worked!

On the 5th October 2012, ISS celebrated United Nations Day!

The day started off with a parade of Nations - all the children dressed in their National Costumes and went up on stage with students from the older grades. Luckily, we managed to just finish the parade before the rain came down!
After eating a much needed snack, K1JW set off to visit the Japanese Room. Inside we encountered sumo wrestler and  hoop games. The children had fun trying to win prizes and trying to knock one another's sumo wrestlers down.

Next we moved onto the Canadian Room - we found ourselves in a large tent along with sleeping bags! We listened to a story about wild animals and then used binoculars to look around the room for hidden animals. After our exciting search, we roasted marshmallows on a pretend fire - and then ate them!
After trying out the sleeping bags again, we moved to the British room - where we got tattoo's on our arms and we pretended to be Kings and Queens! We were also able to try on funny clothes and make our own crowns!  So many things to choose from!

Getting tired and a little hungry, we moved onto our last room - Chinese Room. In this room we tried to pin the tail on the dragon and tried to pick up ping pong balls with chop sticks! Along our journey we made sure our passports were signed by each room we visited.

After we said goodbye to the Chinese Mums and Dads, we moved on out to the playground where there was a large shared lunch! There was food from all different countries to try... some of us went to eat with our parents, while others were helped by Ms Jenney and Aini to choose food and eat in the classroom. One of the favourites were the star cookies from the US table! Ms Jenney was sent out for seconds.

At 1pm it was time to say goodbye ... and many of us went home with our parents. The children who stayed were lucky enough to watch a movie in the MPR Room until it was time to go home.

A very busy, but rewarding day! Lots of people meeting each other, talking and having fun.
A great United Nations Day!

Before the mid-term break holidays, K1JW explored the letter 'S'.
Spiders became a very popular topic! We read the book "The very busy spider" by Eric Carle, watched some spiders at work on youtube, and we sang some spider songs. We looked around the school for spiders, but we were unable to find any. The children decided they wanted to make their very own spider - so we made a plan..
deciding how many legs, eyes the spider would need, what colour it was going to be and what size it should be. The children worked together to create their spider - who they named "Samy".

Ms Jenney then suggested we make some spider sandwiches. These were made out of bread, pretzels, raisins and peanut butter! They looked great and tasted even better.
